I wanted to try making syrup out of Panela because, unlike refined sugars it still has trace minerals because it’s so close to the actual sugar cane. I live in the desert and going through menopause has had me more prone to dehydration so I thought this may help as I’m not a fan of electrolyte drinks. I do have electrolyte drops, (that have no taste), I add to my water when I’m really needing electrolytes but I would like to avoid needing them if possible.
I’ve been adding this syrup to my teas, shakes, and smoothies. It’s very mild in flavor but comes with a lighter flavor like dark brown sugar or a light, smooth molasses.
Here’s a recipe from someone that knows what they’re doing more than I do but I used more water and made mistakes as you’ll see in the video: Homemade Piloncillo Syrup.
I love it though and plan on making it again!
